Herbert P. Wiedemann is Chief of Staff of Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Wiedemann joined the physician staff of Cleveland Clinic in 1984. In 1991, he was appointed Chairman of the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He held this position until 2007, when he became Chairman of the newly created Respiratory Institute, which subsequently grew to comprise four departments (Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy/Clinical Immunology, and Infectious Disease). In March 2018, Dr. Wiedemann was appointed Chief of Staff.Dr. Wiedemann is recognized by his peers as an excellent clinician; he has been listed in Best Doctors in America (Woodward/White, Inc) since its inception in 1992 and America's Top Doctors (Castle Connolly Medical, LTD) since its inception in 2001.As an investigator, Dr. Wiedemann developed and evaluated new treatments for patients with sepsis and the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). He received NIH funding for 26 years, in large part for his leadership in the ARDS Clinical Trial Network ("ARDSnet"). Dr. Wiedemann was principal investigator for one of the ARDSnet's most impactful and frequently cited trials. Dr. Wiedemann also has extensive experience in the monitoring of clinical trials, having served on the Data Safety Monitoring Board, often as chair, for over 20 major trials or consortia, including several for the NIH. He has also served as a consultant to the CDC, WHO, and NIH.Dr. Wiedemann served as a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine's Subspecialty Board on Pulmonary Disease (1998-2004).At the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Wiedemann served as President of the Medical Staff (1995-1996), Editor-in-Chief of the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine (1993-1995), and member of the Board of Governors (2001-2006). In 2008, he was awarded the Maria & Sam Miller Professional Service Award for Scientific Achievement in Clinical Research.Dr. Wiedemann graduated from Yale College and Cornell Medical School. He earned an MBA from Yale University School of Management. He received his residency training in internal medicine at the University of Washington and fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine from Yale University.
