Former Chief Architect at TomTom NV
As Chief Architect, Charles leads software systems architecture and Enterprise Architecture to ensure that TomTom’s location platform system architecture supports TomTom’s product vision and business performance. Charles acquired the Chief Architect role after 11 years as TomTom’s CTO. As soon as he joined TomTom in 2010, Charles led the decision to use open source Android as our navigation device platform. Charles is the architect of our current R&D organization, which is based on product units with product scopes that align with the structure of our location technology product system. Charles is a self-described technology veteran. Charles started his career as a software lead and coding architect at start-up Psion. He pioneered the mobile device category and was a member of the management team that took Psion public in 1988. After 22 years in Psion’s management team, Charles became CTO of Symbian (a spin-off of Psion’s software business unit) in 2013. When Nokia acquired Symbian, Charles stayed on as a VP and tech advisor. Charles is a British national, based in London. He holds a first-class bachelor’s degree in physics and a PhD in computational plasma physics from Imperial College London.
